What Killing Subsidized Graduate Student Loans Will Mean For Jobs
Date: August 11, 2011 04:57PM

Our politicians have done it again. The so-called debt "deal" slashes government support for already burdened graduate students, making advanced degrees less attainable. So while experts tell us education is a key driver of American economic growth -- and growth is what's needed to close the deficit -- Congress makes it harder for people to get the training they need. Anyone else see the policy disconnect?

Sounds good to me, if there are too many post grads then the degree is not as unique. also there schools be different interest rates based on degree,

How about you work and put yourself through school like I did? Your attitude is typical of the entitlement mindset obama has brought to this country. I want to go to school, I dont want to work until I am ready and I damn well want it paid for by others.

Probably the wrong career choice if one is going to graduate school.

"Many of those laid off – especially from high-volume assembly manufacturing jobs – do not have the skills needed in today's modern plant. [...] Today, the industry needs workers who have the skill to process parts, program and maintain highly sophisticated multitasking machines, and understand how to improve their performance. They need to be problem solvers."

On the other hand, how much do entry-level manufacturing jobs pay now that these industries had massive layoffs during the recession and restructured union contracts? 14 dollars/hr.

Damn straight. These kids need to pull themselves up by their own bootstraps and not rely on others to get ahead in life, like George W. Bush and the Koch brothers. And if intellectuals like Glen Beck and Rush Limbaugh didn't need college educations, then what's the big deal anyhow?

Unsub federal loans are still around. Best way to get a graduate degree is to have your employer pay for it, do some research or grab a grad teaching ass't position.

I thought people went to grad school because their lower degrees didn't get them a job and the loans aren't due until you stop going to school.

There is no bigger silver spoon that the Kennedy clan. Do some research on how Limbaugh/Bush got their millions and how the Kennedys got theirs then get back to me.

Limbaugh got his millions by selling his mothers pain pills at a young age so she could buy harder drugs. he also took some for himself which lead to air shipments of oxycontin. Bush got his from the Bin Laden family

George W. Bush inherited his millions, he was not a self-made man. Nor was John F. Kennedy. The point is that some conservatives preach people "pulling themselves up by their own bootstraps" as a rationale for eliminating certain types of education funding while supporting political and business figures whose rise was entirely dependent on being born rich rather than on their own merits. The Kennedy clan has never called for such cuts. There may indeed be valid reasons for ending subsidized aid for grad students, but some of us find it galling that figures like the Koch brothers who sanction the ending of a wide array of social and educational aid had the luxury of being born multi-millionaires. As for Limbaugh, the OP was knocking him not for his wealth but for his pretense of being a deep thinker.
