The car I can understand. It was older and paid off. When you own a car for so long and know it's been maintained, you might be inclined to do the same thing. If it was a few years old, resale value sucks on MB's and you might end up worse off than you were.

You are mischaracterizing their situation. The house was bought and the kids conceived before the husband lost his job. As she puts it...
"In just two months, we’d gone from making a combined $120,000 a year to making just $25,000 and leeching out funds to a mortgage we couldn’t afford. Our savings dwindled, then disappeared."
The kids were born significantly premature, which is a nightmare anyone might have to go through. And the housing market crashed. A lot of people were caught in that mess, through no fault of their own (unless they grossly overextended themselves).
Shit happens. It doesn't take much for some people's lives to fall apart. Losing your job and having two babies with medical issues probably took a real tole on the family emotionally. That may have hindered the husband's ability to find a new job.
The way you guys are criticizing these people you'd think they had been on welfare for generations. Cut them some slack. This could happen to you.

There is a lot more involved in caring for two premature infants than feeding.
There really isn't any good answer for this. It was a cluster of bad timing, bad situations, bad luck, bad decisions, etc. It could happen to anybody. I still say sell the Mercedes and pay cash for a less expensive car and use the money for the family needs.
People could just not have sex until they are financially secure, etc. That would help a lot. But that probably isn't going to happen. Birth control isn't 100%. Having children before you have a good financial safety net creates a lot of problems. But, you can also go through your financial safety net really fast.
