It’s been almost a year since Fairfax County Public Schools voted to include “gender identity” in a nondiscrimination policy. At a school board meeting Thursday night, the debate was reignited with a change to another school policy.
In a 9-3 vote, the school board voted to include “gender identity” to the school system’s Equal Opportunity policy. Several members of the school board said the change to the list of reasons a student cannot be excluded from school activities should have been made after last year’s vote, but it was left out by mistake.
“I think it’s important to go ahead and make what is a housekeeping change, that should have been made by staff,” said board chairman Pat Hynes.
At the auditorium of Luther Jackson Middle School in Falls Church, dozens of parents stood in support of the school system’s protections for transgender students.
“Now my child does not feel singled out and she feels a part of the community again,” said Davin Johnson, the mother of a transgender daughter in the school system.
The move to change the policy only appeared on the agenda this week, and that fact led to some parents accusing the school system trying to sneak the change through.
“I have a little child and she’s afraid of boys and now she has boys coming into the bathroom,” said one father, who didn’t want to be named after he left the meeting upset.
At times during the meeting there were outbursts in the audience, resulting in some parents being asked to leave.
“Let’s not do it this way, where we’ve got some members of the community feeling like they didn’t have a chance to speak at all,” said board member Thomas Wilson.
Wilson received support from other board members in his call for a delay in voting on the change, but there were not enough votes to stop the policy update.

It was a pathetic show of ...something. There's a process and procedure for everything and these 12 better get it together. I watched on TV and saw three reasonable people trying to stand amoungst the fools. Why the rush? Why not lay out the regulations before the policies? Why not demand those who don't have children to spend some time with kids! A handful of these foolish people are taking our once phenomenon system down as fast as they can. Maybe we all move away and leave it with them. It got so late and there was a lot yet to do. Why not call it and regroup later? The Chair took over and made them press on? Why? Oh wait, because it was nearly midnight and everyone was gone or not watching so they could whatever? We have to demand that this group do better by our children. No, don't allow discrimination or bullying of anyone but by the way they're writing it in the book all have to sign, a boy identifying as a girl can take a spot on the girls cross country team after failing to make the boys team. What about boys who identify as boys, asked Elizabeth Schultz. Crickets.

Children should never be asked or as in this case, intimidated into "signing" anything.

What would be the impact if there would be a mass refusal of the parents and students to sign the student's rights and responsibilities document that is referred to in the debate? The Board is either naïve or being cute with the "vague" approach to the construction of the statement when there WILL be a substantial effect on the girl's athletic programs sometime in the near future. Whether it is a girl that is deprived of a slot on an athletic team or a competitor who loses a game due to a boy playing on a girl's team a lawsuit is an almost certainty. It is life in an educated and litigious culture in Fairfax County.

SR&R is more or less a joke until it comes to recommended discipline for offences such as bringing a knife to school etc.

After viewing the School Board Meeting it has become fairly obvious that students should not sign the Student's Rights and Responsibilities document when it is sent home for approval in the fall. The Board is providing an anti discrimination policy that lacks sufficient detail in order for it to make sense to any rational person. I also think that boys should be encouraged to try out for the girls athletic teams because the board has not provided sufficient guidance regarding the subject.

A lot of people have bad mouthed Elizabeth Schultz about her tirades during the School Board meetings, however, if it was not for her this School Board would be driven around in limos, living entirely off of expense accounts, spending most of their time on school paid travel and have a grandiose list of pet projects that would embarrass the Montgomery County School System.
