Over 1,200 students in Fairfax County are home schooled. Many are from military and Christian families. Quality curriculum resources abound, and they have access to libraries, rec center gyms, athletic fields, and park facilities during the day when these places are often uncrowded.
They have friends, parties, mall trips, school-related field trips, and pretty much anything else that their parents can provide. They have their own soccer leagues, or participate in community sports.
Because they don't have the wasted time of public schools, or the need to teach to the masses, they can go into depth on any subject, and accomplish their required schooling in far less time.
Parents are required to meet state standards, and you rarely hear of anyone who does not exceed them.
My neighbor's kid finished high school at age 17, and as an NMSQT finalist had her choice of colleges with a free ride.
That said, you really need a stay-home parent who is dedicated to schooling their child to make it work.
