Jersey Mike's guilting us into tipping
Posted by: Quit shaking me down ()
Date: March 10, 2015 01:42PM

Tipping in the US is ridiculous enough (even though I generally tip about 20% for average service), but now fast food joints like Jersey Mike's is now guilting us into paying tips? I work my ass off at my professional job and I have never received a tip in my life. I've had enough of this and will not patronize any place that asks me to tip. Of course I can select "No thanks" but then that makes me look and feel like a cheap douchebag, which I'm not.

What other restaurants are doing this so I can avoid them? And yes, I know it's not employees doing this but their rich corporate offices who want us to pay an ever increasing percentage of their operating expenses.

Just hit "Other Amount" and put zero or a negative number.

That is BS. I hate that shit too, I notice all the places using Ipads usually with Square have the same exact thing. They all ask you if you would like to tip.

I forget which ice cream place it was, but they had an ipad using square checkout.

You don't need a tip for putting Ice cream on a cone.

You can do that, but you will still look and feel like a cheap douche. By the way, Jersey Mike's makes good subs and the employees are always great people, at least at the Chantilly store that I used to frequent.

In most countries you don't even tip your waiter at a restaurant much. 5% is about standard just to be nice. 15% or 20%? Maybe if their giving you a hand job while you eat.

A fast food worker? Forget about it.

It's not the tipping that should concern you, rather the funky film and food bits shown so clearly thanks to the OP's great photo. Think of the hands that touched that reader and where they've been.

If this is the filth you can see, think about what you can't see. A quick swab would most definitely show fecal matter on the device.

It's amazing we're all still alive.

Do you tip the guys stocking the shelves at the grocery store? Why tip someone for pulling a bottle of soda out of a cabinet and handing it to you?

I was a waiter, and I was paid half minimum wage because I was classified as a tip receiver. If you are getting minimum wage or better working at a counter then you shouldn't be expecting tips or harassing people for them.

At least the cashier doesn't ask you every time if you would like to put 10%, 15% or 20% in the tip jar.

The only proper reply to that would be "Sure, if you drop and start sucking my dick! And swallow."

Nope to tipping Starbucks, DD, Jersey Mikes, or any other carry out self service fast food style food seller. If the food comes in paper or plastic and you pay standing at a counter = NO TIP

Next 7-11, Wa Wa, and Sheetz will be asking for tips

I'm willing to bet there's way more fecal matter on whatever device you typed that up with. the soda dispeners all have fecal matter in the ice.

Shit, unless you NEVER store your toothbrush in the bathroom it has poop on it as well.

I've viewed these devices as a sign of spreading innumeracy--that all too many people can't calculate tricky things like 10% ("hmm...carry the 7...no, wait, that's not it...").

I tip when I feel like it, don't when I don't. Guilt don't enter into it.

I don't want to hijack this thread into who has the best subs, but Jersey Mike's is AWFUL. I was expecting something close to the subs that I grew up with in New Jersey...good bread, meat stacked high, quality toppings, good oil & vinegar dressing. Instead you get generic cold cuts, packaged lettuce, flavorless tomatoes and some half-assed dressing.

There are decent delis around...Bernie's in Fairfax knows how to make a sandwich...but finding a decent sub is like finding a good NY slice...it doesn't exist in Fairfax.

Jersey Mike's was pretty darn good five or so years ago, but I am not sure that they were in the DC market back then. I recently had a craving and went to the one in Springfield. The Italian (or whatever they called it) was stacked pretty well with ham, spiced ham, salami, etc., and a big show was make of putting on the oil and vinegar.

Totally without flavor...I could not taste much beyond the bread. Verrrrrry disappointing, and I am not going back.

Further hijack, The Italian Store in Arlington and The Deli (Herndon, Fairfax, maybe one or two other locations) use quality cold cuts, etc., and are really good.

Back on topic, I did not tip at Jersey Mike's when I went there this recent time.

Why is the tip generally based on how much you spend? If I'm spending $30 on a steak which comes out on a single plate, why am I expected to tip the same minimum amount as the person that orders say..six $5 apps?

Al's on Mt. Vernon is the shit. It has been a long time since I got one of their steak and cheeses.

I don't mind Jersey Mike's. I usually hit the one in Springfield and the service there is pretty good. Used to go to Bozelli's but the prices started getting expensive. I liked it before they started srucing up the palce, opening a new spot, and going into the Iced Tea business. I also hit Sandwich Republic there by the Giant. All 3 are tons better than Subway for lunch.

I say “no” for spite, because they ask. Waiters and Waitresses are tipped because they are working for tips. It’s different. They are not paid the hourly wage. They are paid by the customer. It’s a little like working for commission. If these companies would like to explain to me how times have changed and paying a tip at the register is appropriate, I’d be glad to listen. In lieu of an explanation, I’d be happy if they included a “Fuck No!” button.

It's actually pretty good. Good subs with good ingredients. An order of magnitude better than a whole lot of places around here.

I've noticed the tip thing to but never felt bad or guilty about not tipping. Figured it was just there for the option. If they had to take care of something special for me and really went out of their way i'd leave a tip. But if i'm just ordering something from the menu and walking out, there's no reason to tip.

$13 for a 15" sub is still absurd. Harris Teeter and Wegman's kick their ass on price and quality. Jersey Mike's wins on quantity...yawn. 15" of shit is still shit.

I'm stuffed after one of their a regular 7" sandwiches, if i spent $13 on the giant it'd be 2 meals for me. i eat HT subs a few times a year, they're ok but not great. i'd take a jersey mikes original italian any day over HT's italian. jersey mikes slices their meat and cheese fresh, HT's is already cut. and JM's uses five kinds of meat on the italian, not just 3 kinds like HT and other places.

Tipping is a perverse American habit that is getting out of hand. Restaurant servers at sitdown places merit a tip but a takeout order?? You've gotta be kidding except these jokers are not kidding. Try going to JMs for a couple of times on takeout and not tip they will give you a half assed service and a jaundiced look.

Landlords raised the rent 35 percent. No choice but to leave. Bazzanos steak and cheese was awesome. Delias in Springfield is my go to spot for greek food and subs. Great food.

UGH I read that as "poop into". This site is getting to me.

I don't touch the iPads. I just ask them to do it for me. It makes them ask me, "Tip?" and I reply, "No, thanks."

And if that pisses them off, they need to get another job.

Best when your fast food is prepared where you can see it happening.

I don’t tip at Subway and I am proud of it. Most of my credit cards are usually declined so when I find one that actually works no tip for you.

I don't tip at McDonalds, either.

I actually do tip the rare times I go to Starbucks.

I am mostly a shut-in and I get a lot of delivery. I tip the drivers usually around $6-8 depending on how far they had to go. (Regardless of the price of my order.) The greatest distance they ever go is 2 miles.

I tip the pizza guy $4 for going exactly two blocks, (Plus the restaurant charged me $4, some of which goes to him.) Restaurants that farther away than 2 blocks get $6.60 - $8.50 for the tip. (For the driver - not including the service fees he is partially paid.)

All in all, I pay about $10-12 per delivery (delivery fee plus tip), for most orders from restaurants within 2 miles. (Plus the delivery service jacks up every menu item by $1-$4 above the normal menu price.)

Typical total cost of a delivered order (two meals) is $38-$80.

I pay $10/month subscription, otherwise the Service fees would be double this.
