A Fairfax County police chopper brought Gov McAuliffe to the city as state choppers were on missions.

The State police chopper was said to have been maintained beyond what is required by FAA regulations. One Trooper was a veteran of the unit and the other was a former bodyguard to the Governor.

There have been 2 other troopers lost in a Arial accident in the departments history June 20th 1950

One of the troopers Bates was the Gov's bodyguard, the other Cullen was a long time State police pilot who flew many Virginia Gov's. Former State Police Supt M. Wayne Huggins mentioned in this Richmond Times dispatch article was the Sheriff of Fairfax County for 10 years from 1980 to 1990 then after he held a top federal prison position was appointed Supt of the State Police, he began his law enforcement career as a trooper in NOVA.Then he became a FXCO deputy and Chief Deputy Sheriff of Fairfax County before running for Sheriff.
