The one thing I have learned from all this is that I will never use Yelp again. I knew there were some problems with reviews not being accurate, but this has gone crazy. So many people who have never been to the Red Hen posting fake reviews. You can’t tell me someone who just stared yelping, that have only one review, and they're from CA, have actually really ever been there. People still posting fake reviews on the Red Hen DC after its been reported they got the wrong Red Hen. The best one was the guy who posted a negative review on the DC Red Hen's page about a menu item that is on the Lexington Red Hens menu.

2 of those are accounts I started. Nothing going to anything like the red hen...although that's not what my description read. Ever been to Lexington? It is rural and conservative, save for a few connected with the college and townies with the same mindset. Heck, the entire school is imprinted with Robert E Lee - the bus service is named after Lee's horse. That kind of thing would last 15 seconds on a urban campus.

I don't wish the owner ill, but restaurants run on thin margins and there is no way one can alienate 50% of the customer base (or more) and stay in business. And chasing the remainder of the Sanders' party down the street (who are actually liberal) and castigating them at the neighboring restaurant is really bad judgment for a business owner. The owner was asked to step down as the head of the business association - again - she used bad judgment.

I dined there, with my wife and family, shortly before we dropped our son off at Washington and Lee. I was in the bathroom when the head-chef walked out of the shitter, messed with his hair for a second, then went back to the kitchen. Never washed his feces covered hands. We got the hell out of there.

Something about the high drama of it all, the hecklers following them to the other restaurant...seems staged. Like they were doing it for publicity and attention and were really trying to provoke Sanders into reacting negatively towards them but things didn't turn out quite the way they envisioned.

The Sanders party was seated, ordered an appetizer, ate the appetizer which was basically sliced cheese and crackers shared between 7 people (probably took 5 minutes to prepare and 5 minutes to eat)...in the meantime, we are to believe that the staff was calling this owner and telling her that Sanders (yes, THAT Sanders) was in the restaurant "What do we dooooo???!!!"

The owner rushes like the wind to the store and arrives after the family has finished their appetizer but before their main courses have been served. The owner immediately asks Sanders to step outside where she "politely" asks Sanders to leave. Sanders very nicely says o.k., she offers to pay for the appetizer, gets her family and they leave. The owner then *pursues* the family an to another restaurant, rallies a group of hecklers and proceeds to heckle the family from outside the restaurant.

I dunno. Sounds sort of fishy to me.

Furthermore....you really think that people weren't talking about Sanders being in town, where she was staying. I would be surprised if Wilkinson, especially with her role as a business leader in that small town, didn't know darned well that Sanders was likely to show up at her restaurant. Even if the reservations were under another family member's name - Wilkinson would know that.

The more I think about it the more this really, really sounds like a set up.

I really think that the owner was trying to provoke Sarah into making a scene and then the owner would have lapped up all of the attention for standing up for herself and her staff. I can just see how that would have played out in the media. Business would have boomed for The Red Hen and the owner,she and her staff would have been modern day heroes!

But Sarah kept her cool, quietly left the establishment w/o a fuss and went home. No drama, no cross words, no scene. Her BIL very nicely quieted the hecklers and could not have been more civil to them. They handled a difficult situation with the utmost of grace.

Talk about things not going as expected, lol.

July 5th.

I heard they'll reopen after July 5th. But, as far as I know, there is no set date for reopening.

I guess they are waiting for the controversy to die down. The owner is in an unsympathetic position but, although I despise what she did, I do think that if she admits that she crossed a line and she sincerely apologizes for making a mistake, that people are just going to have to let this go and let her and her staff get back to making a living for themselves.

She earned the backlash that she's getting but it's time to learn from this and move on. Some of the protesters are crossing the line now - like dumping a bucket of animal poop on the sidewalk in front of her restaurant - that is batsh*t crazy and needs to stop. Time to move on folks!

Sometime in early July is the expected time to re-open, but considering how this establishment has pissed off the local citizenry, it is doubtful they will be able to operate like a normal restaurant ever again.

The restaurant business is difficult without committing fatal business errors, so I cannot see how this restaurant survives past Labor Day.

The result of this Red Hen fiasco is that there is going to be a whole lot less tolerance for this sort of BS.

I really don't care if Wilkinson's business survives or not. That is 110% her problem to deal with. But the bottom line is that the poo she was flinging at Sanders boomeranged right back on her and it has not been pleasant experience for her to say the least. I think her business is cooked and there is no going back for her. Don't let her play the victim by using the big old mean protesters as the excuse for her business failure. Her business will fail because she made a very bad decision.
