FCPS Summer Reading List

Just received the FCPS Summer Reading List. For sixth grade:

65 suggested titles to choose from.
45 are fiction or fantasy.
Of the 20 non-fiction, there are two biographies:

Cobb, Vicki. MARIE CURIE. (Nonfiction) This is the biography of the Nobel Prize-winning Polish scientist who discovered radium and changed the world.

Thomas, Garen. YES WE CAN: A BIOGRAPHY OF BARACK OBAMA. (Nonfiction) This is a biography of Barack Obama, from Illinois senator to presidential candidate.

One civil war book:

Cox, Clinton. UNDYING GLORY. (Nonfiction) This is the story of the courageous men of the 54th Regiment of Massachusetts, who fought as Union soldiers to free their brothers and sisters from slavery. Included are black-and-white archival photographs that bring the “Glory” brigade to life.

One civil rights book:

Freedman, Russell. FREEDOM WALKERS. (Nonfiction) The author breathes life into the key personalities and events that contributed to the yearlong civil rights struggle. The struggle became known as the Montgomery Bus Boycott.

And one book on architecture:

Macaulay, David. MOSQUE. (Nonfiction) A mosque, with its enormous central dome of the prayer hall and minaret tower, rises above the city. How was such a structure built? Why was it built? Who are the architects?

Happy reading, kids!

Just one - Al Gore's An Inconvenient Truth is listed as a Non-Fiction book for seventh and eighth graders.

I understand Marie Curie. But isn't there a more appropriate and readable biography than of the current President, regardless of who it is?

Gore's An Inconvenient Truth and Obama's biography are works of fiction.

Why not have 'em read "Mein Kempf" and the Unabomber manifesto while they're at it?

Most of the books listed above sound like standard fare for elem/middle schoolers - stories about America's current or past politics & history.

The Macauley book I'm not familiar with, but it certainly makes sense given the FCPS demographic - there's gotta be at least a 10% Muslim population in the school system at this point. However, Macauley's books are usually engineering related, as far as I remember...
