Football has been down in FFX for years, all of the talent seems to have moved west

I think Overton will get a few of his PME kids to come to St. James, but the cost of the school is going to make it difficult for most families. Also, Overton’s reputation and his staffs social media posts may keep families with money away. I’ve heard from a few people that it’s hard to trust their child’s education to people who post with incorrect grammar and poop emojis on twitter.
99% of these academies have gone under when they’ve tried to field football teams. I doubt both survive in the long run and if they do it’s unlikely that these coaches will still be around to see it. The few academies that have made it burned through coaches the first 5-10 years.

A money grab, yes. His job security at Hayfield as the coach was in the air and even if he stayed he would not be able to recruit kids into Hayfield like we saw this past fall.

Based on All Hitches chat with Vossler, it seems that the Northern Region will simply take the Top 4 teams from the Liberty and the Concorde District for the playoffs and then cross bracket them. Ranking will be based solely on in-district games, so out-of-district games will not affect making the playoffs. Not sure how the Occoquan Region will handle playoffs. Didn't take the time to see if this has already been discussed but it is an interesting development.

The Northern Region got it right, this is the exact same format they use for their basketball tournament. Something tells me the Occoquan Region will find a way to screw things up…

If the did it like the Northern Region the top team in the Patriot would play the 4th best team in the National who would be 3-7 or 4-6, those type of teams don’t belong in the playoffs, enough of the participation trophies!

The Northern Region playoffs last fall based on Powerpoints:

1. Madison – 8 Chantilly
4-Westfield – 5 Herndon

2. Washington-Liberty – 7 Yorktown
3. Langley – 6 Marshall

With the upcoming rules the playoffs last fall would have been:

L1 Washington-Liberty – C4 Chantilly
C2 Westfield – L3 Herndon

C1 Madison – L4 Yorktown
L2 Langley – C3 Centreville

South County has final interviews early next week. Hayfield has paused the search for a new coach until a permanent athletic director is hired in May. Mt. Vernon has final interviews next week.
On a side note Overton’s St. James team has tryouts soon. 122 HS athletes and 56 MS athletes have signed up to tryout. Quick math says that 178 kids x $125 each = $22,250 brought in during one tryout. I’m interested in what his roster size gets to next season. The more kids he brings in that are willing to pay full
T tuition the more D1 kids he’ll be able to scholarship.

It's a shameless money-grab. Overton has literally taken to "following" every football player in NOVA that has an X account in a marketing/recruiting effort.

This is one argument for bringing all privates into the VHSL along with public schools like they do in Pennsylvania e.g. At least there, the PIAA regulates and controls the recruiting activities of private schools.

Why would Patriot go along with that? National is the weakest district and historically only got in 2-3 teams in under the power point system. Now they are going to get 4? It would be like the SEC letting Mountain West having automatic berth in the playoffs at the expense of one of their teams.

I believe it is up to the regions to decide playoff qualifications.
So 6D (Concorde & Liberty) decided in top 4 from each district, which makes sense as the Liberty is much more competitive nowadays. The 4th best team from either district is likely to be a 6-4 or 5-5 team.
My understanding is that Region 6C is sticking with Power Points. The 4th ranked in the National would likely be a 3-7 or 2-8 ball club so this makes sense for 6C. That way the 5th ranked Patriot team isn’t knocked out of the playoffs to an inferior National team.
So it seems like the system allows the regions to do what works best for them.

Coach Holland has a strong background and, according to sources, crushed it during the interview process. He has a dynamic personality and could be a great fit for Mt. Vernon.

There is a lot of untapped talent at MV.

The Majors were 30-11 from 2017-2020 (against tougher competition) but they've been mediocre and predictable in the post-Covid years and have lacked the energy and work-ethic that previously existed. A dedicated and focused coach could get them rolling again.

Coach Taylor did an awesome job at MV while he was there. His charisma and energy is unmatched. The kids loved him! However MV is the smallest school by enrollment in division 6. When you have Fort Belvoir telling people to go to hayfield and south county. Whom are all zoned for Mount Vernon. Then all the zoned athletes in neighborhood going to Gonzaga, BI and Catholic. Makes it tough. Meanwhile having the allure of west Potomac who Mount Vernon hasn’t beat in four years. Some of the kids who are zoned for west po live across the street from MV. Which is weird.

All in all it’s going to take some hellacious coaching to be competitive. MV is getting tired of just beating teams in conference. It is no secret.

If enrollment dictated success, then Alex. City would never lose.

Mount Vernon's enrollment is barely smaller than Hayfield's. Enrollment is not a problem at MV. Although they do lose some of the Belvoir kids to other schools, they still have just under 2000 students. This is enough to compete. Plus MV has a good football demographic.

All of the recent MV losses to WP were very close games. The Majors are not far off from being able to return to a higher level of play.

Coach Holland can hopefully provide consistent leadership. We'll see if he can get MV past the mediocre stage.

There is a BIG gap between the National district and average. Robinson, who has been horrible the past two years, would have been the best National District team the past two years (minus the illegal Hayfield team). The Liberty district has improved, but the National has gotten worse. I’ve been saying this for the past five years. The talent in the county has leveled out some, but the coaching talent has gotten more centralized at a few schools. That is why you are seeing massive swings when a staff leaves. If you want your school’s football program to improve invest in the coaching staff. Hire coaches in the building and take care of them. Otherwise those coaches are going to end up at the same schools that are always winning.

This is true. The National is way behind as a whole. But MV should be much better than they have been the past few years. They lost to a terrible UnityReed team this year. And at a place like MV it does come down to coaching. It is not an easy job but the right person can win there. Coach Fritts turned MV around immediately when he arrived there. They had sucked but he changed the culture and had kids working hard than they had ever worked. Low expectations lead to mediocrity or failure which then lead to even lower expectations. These low performing schools need someone to break the cycle. It can be done although it's not an easy job. The biggest challenge is changing the mindset and expectations.

This is a terrible comparison. That Hayfield number includes 7th and 8th graders.

Comparing only 9th to 12th - Hayfield is at about 2055 and MV is about 1950.

This is a miniscule difference.

Culture and expectations are the drivers of success in football - not enrollment numbers.

Fritts won at MV because he brought kids from across the river that he knew from coaching at Friendship Collegiate. That was well known. Even then they didn’t win big games and the Natl district was worse when he was there. He left as soon as his transfer talent dried up.

Fritts didn’t have any transfers across the river. Trust this source lol.

Fritts won because he was an excellent coach. He had one impact transfer player in the seven years he was there. He won with MV-area talent.

Anyone who dismisses Fritts' accomplishments as coach is a fool. He took over the most horrible program in NoVA and instantly turned them into a respectable and competitive team.

Also, for many years MV wasn't in the National District. MV was in Conf. 13 at one point (with Lake Braddock, SoCo), then the Gunston District with T.C. and West Potomac - much larger schools - which Mount Vernon competed with consistently. MV didn't move to the National until 2021.

A fair criticism of Fritts is that he didn't adequately re-build his defensive staff after the departure of Louisville to West Potomac in 2021.

Regardless, he's the best head coach MV has had in the past 25 years. It's not even close.

Soco hired Alex Urquhart to be their next head football coach. He was 1-9 at Woodbridge, 3-7 and 4-6 at Rock Ridge. Not sure why they hired him over several qualified candidates. Announcement coming next Monday.

What's the issue do you know the guy? I do former staffer of his. Didn't go 1-9 at Woodbridge during that rag tag covid season 10 games weren't played...Two years at a school with a demographic that is majority East Asian decent. Changed the narrative around the school and football program. WON MORE GAMES IN 2 YEARS then any other coach who led the program Most kids ever sent to play at the next level Two Kids to ever go Division 2 or better. Most all district and all region selections. Coached in one of the best division in Texas against the best comp there is. So before you let emotions get involved make sure you know the facts! SOCO is getting home run hire and great coach even better man!So again I ask why isnt he qualified?

If Alex is indeed the new coach my biggest fear is not his win/loss record, but his inability to stay at a job for a sustained period of time. 3 head coaching jobs for a young coach gives me reason to believe as soon as trouble hits he’s out the door.

Exactly & other coaches with a better track record applied. Can’t understand the rationale here from SoCo.

I’m a father of a Rock Ridge kid. I’m not sure if Coach Urquhart is the next HC at South County but he recently stepped down at RR. Coach really did a good job changing the culture of the football program. Top notch in the weight room and got kids recruited. Extremely smart guy! I’m sad to see him leave and if he is indeed headed to South County, they are getting a good coach.

What gives you the indication of it being trouble for his reason of leaving? I guarantee there is no trouble at RR if it is true he left us in prime position to do something that’s never been done before here. If that’s what you really think ask him why he left those to places I promise he’ll give you a clear cut answer that’s the type of man he is.

I know there was a coach with a decade of Head Coach experience that applied. He had won multiple district championships and hadn’t had a losing season in a while. Has the RR coach ever had a winning season as a Head Coach.

Aziz, I’m sorry you didn’t get the job. Or any other job this cycle. Lord knows you apply for every opening. You got screwed at Hayfield and I’m sure you are a good coach, just not the one South County wants.

That would only affect public schools, since (most) private schools are not part of the VHSL.
