WiFi switch/router question
Posted by: need help ()
Date: April 09, 2011 03:19PM

hello

I have a wireless router on the third floor.

My bluray player in the basement only accepts an ethernet connection.

Is there someway I can get a wireless router or switch in the basement and have it tap into the one on the third floor utilizing its internet?

Anybody have any experience with this?

I'd try this first.

go to Micro Center and buy a 100 foot ethernet cable and connect 1 end to the blue ray player and the other end to your existing router on the 3rd floor

I'm guessing you want to stream video through your blueray player. Depending on your wireless setup/house configuration, you may not get enough reliable bandwidth with wireless.

If that doesn't work, there are 2 wired ways -

1) A long Ethernet cable/adding Ethernet cable in the wall that KeepOnTruckin recommended. Definitely works, but depending on your house, installing it can be a pain.

2) Using home wiring with HomePlug AV adapters.

HomePlug has several throughput standards, the newest/fastest is 500. Whether HomePlug AV works/works well depends on the age of your house & its wiring configuration. There are a number of vendors. We use NetGear's 200 adapters & 4 port switches & they work well for us, but we're not streaming a lot of streams. My brother-in-law is in an apartment building & replaced his unreliable wireless & wires running everywhere with them & they work for him too.

Their 500 adapters are new. if you want to connect more streams and if you can find them, I would get these instead of the 200s.

Considering you don't have any idea what you're doing, Google would help.

Look up "Ethernet Bridge" to find out how to do what you want :)
