If your only measure of what makes a school good is whether you can get into a college (or into certain levels of "good" schools) then perhaps, on average, and in general, you are right.
However, if you consider things like the level of character and integrity instilled, or depth and breadth of knowledge, or ability to grasp complex concepts and ideas, or anything beyond statistical modeling for college entry, then private schools win hands down.
Free markets succeed in the case of education.
Public schools are like emergency rooms at a county or city run hospital and other government assistance. It'll do, it's not always substandard, but it is rarely more than simply the bare minimum. If you can afford better, it will benefit you to spend the extra money.
If you lived in DC, would you rather go to Greater Southeast Community Hospital, or Georgetown University Hospital? I mean, you paid taxes to support GSECH, so why not just use what you paid for, right?
I see public schools in the same light -- Sure, I paid taxes for them, but that was an investment in my community, and I will invest my own money in my children so I can get them the education I think they deserve. Plus, by not using the public service since I can afford private service, I free up resources at the public service to better serve those in need.
