Breaking Bad open thread [POTENTIAL SPOILERS]

OMG BRAEKING BAD YOU GUYS. If any show deserves its own discussion thread, it's this one.

Here's a topic to get things rolling: Does Hank know about Walt's involvement in the meth trade? Every once in a while I get the feeling that Hank is far smarter than he lets on.

I'M A FIVE-STAR MAN!!

Just started watching season 1 last night and am starting ep #7 right now. This thing is awesome. Not gonna read the thread because I don't want to see spoilers but I highly recommend. Skipping the football game to finish season 1 and start season tonight.

I've added "POTENTIAL SPOILERS" to the thread title, so feel free to discuss anything. Like the hilarious death of Ted, for instance.

I was pleasantly surprised with Bill Burr on this show... He hasn't really done anything spectacular yet, but he seems really genuine...

The death was hilarious...

I have always hated Walt's wife... I didn't like how they were trying to make us like her this season... but I'm kind of glad that she fucked up...

Back to hating the bitch...

I think walt's only options are to either kill Gus (too hard to do). Or come clean to the DEA and seak witness protection. He has lost control of the situation. But I doubt either will happen now.. It'd kill the show.

How is Walt going to get out of this one?

I think he's going to man up and take the punishment to keep his family out of it... and then I think Jesse is going to come through and save the day somehow...

I don't give a shit about hank... I hope he gets killed..

Taking the long view... there's no way Walt survives past the end of the series. AMC has stated that there will be one more season after this one, so he's got to stay alive for another 15 or so episodes. I think Saul's colleague gets Walt and family into hiding, but Gus kills someone close to Walt in the season finale, and next season is Walt's quest for vengeance.

Though wouldn't it be incredible if the news of a 5th season of the show was a calculated misdirection, and the show ends in the next 2 episodes with Walt's death? Seriously, that would be an ending that no one saw coming, and this show does pride itself on taking unexpected turns...

I'M A FIVE-STAR MAN!!

Walt will blow up the lab. He'll need to destroy it because now Hank will convince the DEA to investigate Gus and they'll find the lab with evidence that Walt has been cooking. (And because blowing up the lab is pretty cool tv)

Walt will kill Gus (maybe in the lab explosion) This will put him in position to run the distribution network next year.

Mike will come back from Mexico next year pretty pissed off.

Next year will be about Jesse wanting out because he needs to protect his girlfriend and her kid. Jesse will be the one who really does the right thing for his family (unlike Walt)

Walt will die of cancer in the end.

Saul knows way more than he's letting on.

Saul does present a good story byline. Never thought about Saul getting busted. That would make for an interesting twist.

Blowing up the lab would be a good fix, but then how is Walt going to deal with those associated with Gus?

Walt needs money right now so he has to cook and sell.

Gustavo became evil when as a young entrepreneur as he witnessed the killing of his chemist partner years ago in Mexico by Don Eladio and then vowed total revenge. That is when Gus truly "Broke Bad," perhaps that is some foreshadowing of things to come.

Eh, probably not. But who knows with this show. Anything can happen.

What makes the show amazing is the suspense that the writers are able to successfuly build into even the most mundane parts of an episode. It always seems like something awful is on the verge of happening.

It almost seems like Jesse was convinced too easily of Gus's betrayal... I know he had loyalty to Walt, but are we really supposed to believe he's back to trying to kill Gus?

Nah... I don't think he'd do that... I just thought he was convinced too easily... but, now that he has been convinced, I think he'll want revenge... especially if the boy dies...

But he did tip his hand a little when he talked to Gus... If Gus was the one that took the poison... he knew Jesse had it... So he'd know Jesse knew that the poison was gone... So, when Jesse didn't come out and admit he had poison that Brock may have ingested, it seems a little suspicious...

I was irate when Gus walked out of that room -- how did he survive that? Then it panned across to show the half of himself that was missing... so great.

EDITED TO ADD: Just noticed that tonight's episode was named "Face Off." Clever.

didn't see Walt poisoning the boy coming. Was there enough motive in his character to do that, though? Or did the writers throw in a mind-blowing twist just to blow our minds? Walt is officially a bad man now. I thought season two had the best arc.....the thing with the girl overdosing on heroin and the season-long foreshadowing of the plane crash was really disturbing and suspenseful in a different way.....the suspense this season and a lot of last season was more of a conventional crime drama game of cat and mouse variety. I think the show will become less interesting the more Walt turns into the bad guy. I guess Jesse will take on his role and be the one with all the moral conflict. That's interesting too. But that thing with Gus walking out of the room all blowed up with bad explodey-face CGI was really kind of weird....I don't know if that worked. A little too broad.

good show, tho

the explodey-face thing was just way out of line with the serious tone of the show, the more I think about it. It was really neat and all, but it definitely didn't fit the tone the show usually sets.

I would say it's more tense than serious. The show has definitely has a recurring streak of dark humor -- see the death of Ted (“It was an act of God. Ain’t no accountin’ for no act of God.”) or the "Better Call Saul" ads.

I'm with jhey on this... I think it was perfect... It was a triple mind-fuck... You thought gus was dead, then you thought he was alive, then... HOLY SHIT HIS FUCKING FACE BLEW OFF... WHAT!? IS THIS SOME TERMINATOR SHIT!? Then you realize Gus is really dead...

They aren't usually very graphic, but that's because they always want to keep you guessing and second guessing yourself... I'm glad they made it explicitly, and shockingly, clear that Gus had finally died.

I also liked the ending realization that Walt is no longer just some defensive, reactive, average joe in a shitty situation... He is a cold, aggressive, calculated sociopath... He is a force to be reckoned with...

I am very eager to see what direction the show will take next season...

That was an awesome episode.. I hope next season isn't too boring.

And lets not forget that Gus' goon and right hand man mike is still alive. Last we saw him he was recovering from a gunshot wound in Mexico

I don't think Mike is a threat... I don't think Mike has that kind of relationship with anyone... He seems like a strictly business-type dude... I wouldn't be surprised if he ended up helping Walt...

What about Saul's receptionist? She hinted at extorting Walt... Do you think she has to die next season? What about Saul? I love Odenkirk, but don't you think Saul has always been kind of a weasel? Do you think he needs to be taken out?

No way! What would you prefer? Showing him laying underneath a pile of rubble with ketchup blood on his face!?

Not only was it done in a "Gotcha" type way... but it was so unexpected, so graphic, and so out of character for the show, that it kind of flipped your whole world upside down... When I saw that, I felt disoriented... like I had been in that explosion...

I think there was no better way to kill Gus... It was brilliant.

As much of a weasel Saul is, he seems kind of loyal. He always comes thru.

I see what ur sayin. The suspense too. The whole he's exploded dead no wait he's walking out of the room! WHAAT he has no face, then plop down dead. I think the concept was spot on. Just the execution was a bit rough.

I agree with that guy who just said some things. If the CGI was better, I probably wouldn't question it. But still, that he walked out of the room and adjusted his tie like that....maybe a little too much. Better CGI would've helped, though. Reminded me of Harvey Dent in the Dark Knight when he turned his head and we saw Two-Face for the first time.......fine concept, bad CGI. Really not believable.

My favorite line of the whole episode, and perhaps the season: "All I know is that if I ever get anal polyps, I'll know what to name them."

Last night's episode was a brilliant season finale. After watching Walt "play checkers" all season, committing one ridiculously stupid act after another, it was great to see him become a little more cool and calculating. Gus's death scene was graphic but given that character's history, there was no better way to treat it. I laughed out loud and cheered when he fell over dead. For episodic television, the CGI was was damn good.

I think next season will pit Walt and Hank in a cat and mouse game. Hank is smart and he will connect the dots.

I'm not worried about Mike and his goon army nor Saul. They are both payroll employees and that's where their loyalty begins and ends. If Walt has demonstrates income potential, he's safe even though they could both turn against him in any kind of plea bargain..

I am wondering if the writers will backfill any of Gus' history in Chile which they alluded to in a couple of this seasons episodes. He's highly connected there somehow and it's one of the reasons Don Eladio considered him untouchable. His death might result in some blowback/retribution.

For the record, Mark Margolis, who played Hector Salamanca is a great actor.

Excellent analysis Hank. I can't wait for next season, next summer.
I actually signed up on amctv.com for their little walk on roll contest
