I think Trump's motive is to ensure that the other GOP candidates seem more reasonable and more electable.

He doesn't need the money, he can just get on TV and say things that will make his personal GOP candidate-of-choice seem mainstream.

He'll drop out and throw this massive PR campaign behind whoever is in first place.
