Trump's lawyers argued "the president cannot illegally obstruct any aspect of the investigation into Russia’s election meddling because the Constitution empowers him to, “if he wished, terminate the inquiry, or even exercise his power to pardon.”
So if he feels the 'witch hunt' is damaging him and the country - why doesnt he just end the investigation? Just call the FBI, Congress and anyone else and say 'stop?' If he has that right as his lawyers argue why hasnt he done this already - he has stated in no uncertain terms he thinks the investigation is utterly baseless and political and is harming the country. Isnt it his duty to stop it? What is he waiting for?

Asserting something is not the same as actually being able to do it.
It is unprecedented for a president to pardon himself and there seems to be lawyers on both sides arguing its legitimacy.
It will be a legal mess if he tries. Much worse than just letting the investigation run its course.

Back in Dec 2016 Trump visited the WH as part of the transition. Suppose Obama would’ve pulled out a gun and shot Trump in the head at their meeting, then pardoned himself. Do you think Giuliani would be saying the same things right now?
