President Donald Trump gave a speech to the graduates of the Naval Academy Friday morning. Then, the president went a step further, offering to shake the hands of every single graduate — more than 1,000 midshipmen.

“I was given an option. I could make this commencement address, which is a great honor for me, and immediately leave and wave goodbye. Or I could stay and shake hands with just the top 100,” Trump said, “Or I could stay for hours and shake hands with 1,100 and something. What should I do? What should I do?”
C-SPAN cameras stayed on the president as he shook the hands of hundreds of cadets. The looks on their faces say it all.
In the speech, Trump referenced that his administration is “taking care of our veterans.”

“We passed V.A. Accountability. Everybody said it couldn’t be done,” Trump said, “That’s if you don’t do a good job, you couldn’t get fired. Now, if you don’t do a good job, you don’t take care of our vets, they look at you right in the eye and they say, ‘Jim, you’re fired. Out, out! You’re fired. Get them out of there.’”

The audience of future veterans loved it.

In 2 minutes Trump lied 6 times to the Naval Academy during his speech.

Lie #1: The $700B defense budget for [fiscal year] FY18 is not the largest ever," It was larger under the Obama administration: $710B in FY11 and $714B in FY10. And that's without adjusting for inflation.

Lie #2: The number of ships in the Navy today is not the smallest since the end of WWI. We have 283 ships today, and in 2007 (Bush administration) we had 279.

Lie #3: The Navy will not get to 355 ships "very soon." The Navy's 30-year plan says it will not get to that level until after 2050, but it could possibly be accelerated to the 2030s. Either way, it's not very soon.

Lie #4: Getting to 355 ships is not an increase of "a couple of hundred" ships. Here's the math: 355 - 283 = 72

Lie #5: The 355-ship fleet has not yet been "approved." The ships have not all been authorized yet, and Congress appropriates the money one year at a time.

Lie #6: This year's military pay raise is not the first in ten years. There were pay raises in each of the past ten years, & some were higher than this year's raise.
