Incorrect. Mary, Joseph and Jesus fled to Egypt to escape being killed by their own king (Herod the Great), who ordered all Jewish males under the age of 2 be exterminated as his advisers told him that the prophesied messiah has been born. They were not fleeing the Romans.

There are countless excavations in and around Jerusalem that prove that Jews have lived there for thousands of years. Tribes controlled their own sections of Judea, but present day Israel was controlled by the Jews during the Roman occupation of that land. The Romans renamed it Palestine around the time of Jesus' birth in order to punish the Jews for their constant rebellions.

Joseph got laid off at his carpentry job making crucifixes for the Romans. He ws low on cash so he agreed to sex-traffic Mary over to Bethlehem to do a donkey show in that stable off Main street.
