Whether Trump said it or not. And I don't think it matters one way or the other. Here's why:

It sounds true. While Trump may not have said it, most thinking people would agree that it sounds like something Trump would say. And comparing it other things Trump is known to have said (such as in reference to John McCain). Knowing Trump for the asshole that he is, it is very easy to assume that he would be that kind of asshole. It rings true, and even if you don't completely accept that he said it, it is easy to conclude that is what he believes about American soldiers.

Which is more important than it being true. Voters will assume he said it. And decide accordingly. It will be up to Trump to convince all those who don't kiss his ass that he did not say it. With that credibility deficit, good luck.

We shall see how many people want to elect the asshole who hates our troops AND who presided over the 2020 debacle.

Vote like your life depends on it, because it does.
