You'll have to wait till January 2012 for the official failcast dvd

So, how does 9.5 million downloads over two years stack up to terrestial radio ratings?

Obviously, not everyone who downloads something listens to it. Also, not everyone who downloads something listens to it alone, though they probably do not listen to it with more than a couple of people.

Bottomline, is 9.5 million downloads impressive, or a mark of success, or not?

Seems to me success can measured by attaching a monetary value to each download. If O'Meara's crew gets $.50 per download they've done something.

Great question which has been posed on here before, but never really answered. They sell some of the crappy tshirts, etc, bonus shows, Raw shows and get money from Amazon when you show through them (how much is that, fractions of a cent?) So, how does this program stay solvent? Advertisers....sure, I am sure that is hte bulk of their revenue.

What makes a show successful, dollars made or downloads?

Just because something makes millions of dollars doesn't mean it's good. I have no clue how much they make with their podcast and neither does anyone else here really. There isn't a lot of overhead really so who knows.

If it's entertaining and people enjoy it then it's a success.

Gotta think $$'s. O'Meara's "real" radio shows didn't generate much in terms of ratings, which translate to real revenue in the radio world, so he was fired.

If you look at the O'Meara web site, the advertisers are either local businesses or internet banner ads, I doubt either group generate much in terms of real revenue. Oh, half of the banner ads are for O'Meara projects (e.g., "The Regulars" with Oscar and Tanner).

I think the key is that labor costs are $0.00. O'Meara has one affiliate, KHTK, and that deal plus Rob(b)'s two hours (weekly!) maybe generates a few hundred $$ monthly.

In the end, maybe the podcast just keeps these radio wannabes out of the house and "busy", so that's the real value of the enterprise.

9 million podcasts over two years don't equate to that many downloads per day, certainly not enough to complete with or succeed in real radio.

One final thought - someone will post a video of their dog doing something "cute" and it will generate 5 million "downloads" or "hits" - maybe that thought should put O'Meara's "download success" in perspective, given the lack of a monetary value for each of his downloads.

Carolla and WTF have become profitable ventures, but mostly through booking live shows, merchandising, co-branding, etc, and not so much through advertising. Carolla also has the advantage of CBS underwriting part of his bandwidth and using their sales staff to help him.

MOM is not a top show like those. Given the amount of time all of them put into producing it and then splitting the meager proceeds six or seven ways, they would probably still end up ahead of the game if they delivered pizzas for a living.

one forum claim, at least in my case, is proving to be false...someone earlier posted that all the downloads dont necessarily mean that people are listening-just because Itunes pulls it up daily doesnt translate into a listen. I find that at about once a week, I have to manually resubscribe to get the most current pod cast-maybe my itunes is fucked up.

I listen every day for my commute home from 3-4. There is nothing else on. I do like it sometimes but Robb can be such a killer. He talks too damn much. Some days he just cant shut up. I think the best part of the show is when they pick on each other-its starting to get brutal and buzz is getting increasingly grouchy.

I subscribe and get the regular TMOS, TWIO and I think it even pulls in Tech411. I delete TWIO and Tech 411 and have been know to stop or skip episodes, but I get counted for "downloads". Emails sent do not mean emails are read, and a podcast downloaded does not mean a podcast is heard.

This is, as they have said on the show, a labor of love. The monetary value could have been more if Mike would have embraced the concept earlier, not when he had another failed radio show on his resume. I hope Mike writes off the "studio" for taxes sake so he can catch a break there, but otherwise, they all are looking at a couple hundred bucks a month in "salary".

That may be the case, but when O'Meara was interviewed on Channel 50 and asked how the podcast was going, he immediately talked about the 9.5 million downloads, so love of podcasting and love of the O'Meara show crew wasn't first and foremost on his mind at that moment.

Let's say each podcast generated $0.01. That equates to $95K. I'll assume O'Meara, because his name dominates the enterprise takes 50% of that amount. That leaves $47,500 for say six other staff associated with the show which comes out to $329 a month.

Assuming 20 shows per month that's $16.45 for each podcast for Rob(b), Oscar, et al.

That's the definition of a "labor of love".

Is it a good breakdown when it uses totally random numbers with no basis in reality? He even says 'let's say...'.

Chill vato - my $0.01 per podcast is a real "let's say" number.

How grounded is the 9.5/10 million downloads in reality?

I think it's safe to assume that if MOM was making money from the podcast, he would have quit The Edge before they fired him.

Relax, .01 cents has no basis in reality at all. Do you run a podcast and charge people for it? Do you use comparable bandwidth? If so, what is the name of your podcast and how much do you make off it?

You just made random crap up.

Second, I would imagine 9.5 million is pretty realistic. I mean how many god damn shows are there? 9.5 million can accumulate fairly quickly. Doesn't mean those people listened, but that they downloaded it.

Yeah, he hung on to those "janitor's wages" 'til the bitter end. If O'Meara didn't get a decent buyout from Citadel, he's gonna have to start moving some $47.95 TMOS hoodies pronto.

Let me be clear: I was trying to point out that if you assigned a relatively small measure of financial worth to each podcast download considering the effort that goes into the enterprise, it doesn't amount to that much money.

I wouldn't say it's "random crap", it's a small number. The point is/was nobody associated with TMOS is talking so the financial payout is totally unknown.

As for podcasting, I personally wouldn't bother. There are plenty of podcasts available on every subject imaginable, and I expect very few of the podcasters, if any, make much money.

So we are back to the TMOS battle cry: It's a labor of love!

So I hope we part as non-combatents CIF, have a wonderful Wednesdeeee!!

and no don't equate making money with talent

failcast is rarely funny except when lff is acting like the asshat

unfortunately, better produced but after listening to a number of don geronimo shows there are long long stretches without anything remotely funny just a bunch of no talents yakking off boring

Because Don has an actual show that's on the actual radio and reaches actual listeners, consumers and advertisers. Whereas LFF has an Amazon.com banner, 3 sad lackeys and sells $50 sweatshirts on the internet.

Look at this overpriced junk. I wonder if they took a bath on the costs to make this stuff?

Let's re-price this stuff via what the market will actually suffer:

Stickers - $1
ALL t-shirts - $10 (long sleeves $12)
TMOS hats - $5
Travel mug or mouse pad - $7
Hoodie - $15

Not that any of us would buy this stuff even if it was given up gratis!

Hello! This is Katie Powers and I'd like to stick up for myself a bit here. The picture above is possibly the most unflattering picture I've ever seen of myself. It is only rivaled by a picture of me when I was 12 with braces and typical 80s hair -alas we all had awkward times we'd rather forget! I'm not one of those chicks who would demand it be taken down, blah blah blah; however, as much as I can self-depreciate as the next guy, that picture really makes me look bad. I'll go there... Miss Piggy, Shrek, whatever you like.
It's a bad bad picture! I'm just an average, normal girl (who had an unfortunate pic). Thanks everybody and have a super day!
This is what I look like normally:

I hope there's a point someday when time gives perspective and we can look back with objectivity. Don and Mike (in their prime) were more than the sum of their parts.

I listen to both new shows and I don't know how anyone could argue that the background players on each are not crap.

Something special happened when those guys got together and it held on for a lot of years. Now it's like Wings and it's like Plastic Ono and it's sometimes a laugh, but it's never as good as before.

You Mike haters might know more than me, but I remember those old days. Turning the dial through the fuzz to WJFK because those guys were a little better to listen to than whatever else was on.

Only 25,000+ to go folks

"Something special happened when those guys got together and it held on for a lot of years. Now it's like Wings and it's like Plastic Ono and it's sometimes a laugh, but it's never as good as before"

You mean that synergy thing

Been listening to Big Sac edition of Donnie G.show a lot last week or so and intermittingly during past year. It defintely is not thick enough. The current crop of sycophants( or gadflies) are pretty boring. I thought the addition of Slo Joe might add a spark but so far he ain't being used much. Probably getting use to his suroundings and not wanting to upset the apple cart.

Donnie G. talks in hyperdrive most of the time.(funny, LFF did the same thing)
It just sounds forced too me and not terribly funny. I'll listen to an hour of the babbling and I reach a point of sheer boredom that I go elsewhere like WTF or the Nick & Artie show. Donnie uses a lot of the old bits and they sound tired and chewed up too me. I'd think the folks in Big Sac would be tired of these bits having been part of the Ham and Eggs network for so many years. I get feeling Donnie digs doing radio but the well of creativity seems to have dried up.
But I still think its better than asshat LFF's failcast. Unless you enjoy hearing a self centered mediocre talent blow bull shit all the time.

I don't think them getting back together even if they wanted would be very good at this point, the ship has sailed.

the romance is over but i guess we can cherish the memories.

Wow, that link is a blast from the past. I'm listening to '04 ep where Don and Mike are reading off a list of reasons Mike's wife wrote that she wants to divorce him. Meanwhile Don called Frieda to ask how many of those horrible qualities he has.

What episode was that? You know I wasn't a big fan of Freda's but at least she had some radio skills. I still think donnie g. messed with the microphone sound to make her sound more shrewish. donnie g. just started going to her way too much in the later years of don and mike show imo that being said JANET FROM ANOTHER PLANET IS BORING AS HELL and seems to be involved in every show now zzzzzzzzzzzzzz

btws, I beleieve paintyourbaldspot.com is run by The Belcher?

I was a big fan of Don and Mike, I wanted both to do well in their later solo incarnations but it's just not happening,,,

Janet is no Freida, Freida could be annoying sometimes but Janet is listener repellant,,,

Listening to the old shows is a kind of painful reminder of the good ole days,,,

I laugh, then I want to cry,,,

Ever notice how this LFF thread gets hi-Jacked by Donnie G?
And despite the critiques here of his show, at least he has one and is getting good ratings in Sac Cow Town
LFF still on his couch

I guess i was projecting from the early daze of the Donnie G. show on KHTK when she was constantly on. My apologies. Which begs the question if the lff is so successful with its many downlaods has lff been offered a job at XM

I don't know what must hurt Mike more, the fact that a 140 page thread exists solely dedicated to how bad he sucks? Or the fact that for months now even the people that once despised him enough to keep the thread going for YEARS are now too apathetic to post anymore?

I would imagine that whether it's positive or negative, Mike probably craves ANY kind of attention. The fact that people can't even be bothered to hate him anymore must be a dagger in his side. Imagine how depressing your life would be if you eagerly kept checking a hate-thread in the hopes that someone said something shitty about you because at least that would mean that people still cared about you in one way or another. So sad.

The opposite of love is NOT hate, it's complete disinterest.

I listened to the show yesterday for the first time in a couple of months,,,

I kind of missed the guys,,,then Rob(b) did a song parity with his Costco lady drops,,,It was terrible of course,,, Mike and Co laughed like crazy and said how great it was,,,

I don't even know what comedy planet they're on any more,,,

In other show news,,,Mike had knee surgery on Mon,,,but more noteworthy, Rob(b) claims to be losing massive amounts of weight on his diet and has trimmed 6 inches on his waistline,,,

Good for him, he was gonna die if he didn't do something,,,

I've made the same observation, couldn't agree more. I am a Don fan, but find it tiresome to wade through a 2hr podcast for maybe 10 mins of entertainment. I haven't listened in prolly a mo. or so due to that fact.

Prolly something to do w/ the fact that DG is still a CBSer and LFF has no corporate backing whatsoever.

Wow, almost there. 14,000 posts, what a wonderful ride it's been. Maybe MOM and crew can hold a moment of silence for the passing of the largest media following in existence for the show. I guarantee that a lot more attention has been paid to Mike via this thread than has due to his podcast.

Someone should make a retrospective clip of the best posts on here set to the Green Day song, "Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)".

They're pushing a 2 dvd discography of 'Road Trip 2011'; I think it's around $20 to buy. I'm actually considering purchase as seeing those guys in the morning should be good for a laugh, and due to family stuff I'll be alone this Christmas and bored to tears.

reinvented.....no. Is he bringing new cast members into old bits? Yes.

There is no "reinvention" when you have someone doing "trick or beer" in Sacramento instead of Joe Ardengir.

It's Sacramento, if he doesn't have a halfway decently rated show on the air, he's a total fucking moron.
