I think it's a sad commentary on Mike when you consider that the average weekend Harley poser actually has the balls to ride their bike cross-country to Sturgis. Your typical dentist or car dealership GM isn't afraid to jump on their bike and ride it several thousand miles. After all....that's the whole fucking point!

I think Mike is actually terrified of riding his bike. I think he believes he will eat asphalt along the way if he ever really tried to ride to Sturgis.

There is no way in hell that LFF was offered a sports talk job. Not saying he didn't say that, I'm saying he was lying through his teeth.

I cannot count how many times I've face palmed when Mike talks sports. How many times did he call Donovan mcnabb "Dunnivan"? He thinks basketball has periods. He criticized the caps for not keeping a Matt Hendricks because he was one of their best goal scorers (his career high is 9 goals). I remember after one 10 minute discussion that left me speechless he said "I can't believe they didn't keep us. Look how easy sports talk is!". Can you imagine those animals that listen to the Fan hearing a host say "Dunnivan" Mcnabb? Or say a Bulls game is in the third period? I'm not a huge sports guy and even I want to slap him after his sports conversations.

If Chad can have a job in sports talk radio...I assume that rant he did that went viral is what saved him.

I'm pretty sure it was TMOS year 1 and I think it was around the holidays. The LFF was throwing are band of brother a lot, I guess all it takes is a rocket ship to break up the band.

I wonder what was going thru his head, he had to see that guy talk was dead on the radio...Maybe he thought he could easily get another job and fuck wjfk for firing him?

I think right around this time, we find out that the LPS asked to be a board op or do anything at wjfk and CK told him to fuck off

When CBS management was coming down on Mike at WJFK, Mike said something to the effect that he and the krewe could go "across the street" and kick WJFK in the ass in the ratings tomorrow (wasn't exactly this, but something similar). He may have been referring to Cumulus. Regardless, he obviously thought at the time there was huge demand for his over-compensated, under-performing "show." We know better now.

As for sports talk, I think Mike knows as much about sports as Chad and (outside of football) LaVar (which isn't saying much). I think Mike's problem was that he fought WJFK tooth and nail on important things like sitting in on sales meetings to figure out how to market the show and doing live shots and remotes at sponsor events. Mike is out of radio because of Mike, not really because of trends.

One thing LFF kept bringing up while talking about the book (and the firing from CBS in general) was the way they kept the ratings up. That strikes me as completely false, the TMOS terrestrial show was REALLY bad, there's no way they kept all of the D&M listeners. On a recent BOAD show, Chad mentioned how many former interns were still working at the station. "Landfill #1", a 500+ pound behemoth, is running board for some shifts, years after the BOAD show was off the station. Adds to the theory that Fat Rob is completely unemployable.

I believe the LPS said he offered to do anything at WJFK and they said no and he was sad.

I'm sure LPS was a total cock to CK when they were interns and well payback is a bitch.

I don't doubt the rating for TMOS were OK and stable. I remember in the failcast where they discussed the day that Junkies, BOAD, and TMOS all were together, that it was the last attempt to save the format, but it was later told that the format change was a done deal.

I am torn between listening to the show today for their Cumia take and just waiting to hear about it here.

I don't know if my blood pressure could handle the LFF pontificating on why AC is a terrible person.

Edit: I know there are some of you who actually do think AC is a terrible person. I don't give a flying fuck. I'll be purchasing Live From The Compound from day one. The PC horseshit in this country has GOT to stop.

Carla: Mike's take on Anthony is that corporate radio is bad. Mike's so glad he is a podcast pioneer who doesn't have to worry about political correctness; he can say and do anything he wants to on TMOS. As long as it's radio-friendly and 79 minutes long.

Back in the day, D&M left WAVA and went "across the street" to JFK...Back when Don ran the show and times were different....Mike always assumed that was an option...And to suggest that Mike knows as much about sports as Chad or Lavar is utterly ludicrous...He doesn't know shit about football and he knows even less about basketball...Remember the Spewack quiz? It was painful to listen to them discuss the rules...Mike fighting tooth and nail to do extra work? Now that is funny...Funnier that anything Terrestrial TMOS offered...

Chad didn't rant, though naturally they lamented the firing of a broadcaster over speech. Drab seemed to be the most fired up, oddly. I've got to give Chad credit, which is meant positively but also shows how effing much he has ranted and raved any given week.

Sorry, my mistake. I didn't listen to Chad Redskin thing that went viral. I assumed it was Chad yelling into the mic about how the owner is playing fantasy football with real people.

There is NO WAY they kept the ratings, that's just one of Mike's lies...Sure, Drunken Friday shows were good, until it became the Buzz Babe showcase...You think Argument Wednesday or the 2rd or 3rd Buzz of the Day weren't channel changers? I liked the cross promotional stuff they did, but too little too late on the Dysfunctional Friday Show...And LPS? He was completely worthless...Don was a slave to the cart machines, and that was all Rob knew...When they came back to Fairfax, JFK had to hire Babytalk Katie to run the commercial breaks because LPS didn't know how, and really had no intention of learning...He was even reprimanded for talking to her during the breaks...He really had every opportunity to continue his career behind the scenes, but he thought he "was Talent" and we saw where that got him...The segments where they sat in on the Junks for the book signing were a good example...Mike and Oscar were treated like Broadcasters and Rob was dismissed as a "producer type" and rightly so...LPS cut his own throat...Could you imagine that Dullard existing without someone to suckerfish off of? Remoras need that Shark to survive...

peekza just relax

Maybe we will get lucky and the arbitron data is on the web for TMOS

I believe (and I don't have data) that TMOS held their numbers, I'm sure they were lower than D&M. If TMOS, became Howard, wjfk wouldn't be sports talk. I'm sure wjfk management knew what they were getting into with the LFF and rolled the dice. If he produced, great, if not switch over to sports talk

No question LPS sucks at everything. I'm am sure there exists audio of him saying he would have done any job at wjfk to stay after it was canceled and he was rejected.

Sure LPS thinks it is talent, but once fired, I'm sure it wishes it would have learned more production skills.

I've lived in the DC metro area (Colubmia, MoCo, DC, Arlington, and McLean) for 25 years and I've never seen Tony Perkins do weather.

I knew he was an anchor on Fox5, but I didn't realize he was a weatherman at some point. I thought maybe there was a different guy named Tony that went to AMU with LFF and did weather and this Tony was another LFF friend. I didn't realize they were the same guy, since I don't recall TP doing the weather, which is how the LFF talked him up.

Fuck you dude. The cards were stacked against jhopkins from the start - and like we've outline many times, he had two options: play along and get in digs where he could, or go out in a blaze of "FUCK THE LFF" glory. He chose the former.

TMOS was in the high teens/low 20s on JFK. It got a slight bump to maybe 15 right before the plug was pulled due to its lead-in to the Caps during playoffs. Mike claiming he had good ratings at JFK is revisionist history. Don't believe it? Search this thread for 2008/2009. Stations don't fire people who get good ratings.

I always heard the hate from the radio guys about WAMU and WTOP, which makes sense because those stations are blowing the others out of the water.

So, if these AQH are right (% of the total pop that is listening any given 15-minutes), that means 424k people are listening to WTOP and 90k people listen to WJFK.

I'd assume the switch to sports talk was done to make things cheaper and get better ratings.

Wow, if those numbers are true that means LFF converted around 13% of his radio audience to podcast DL'ers.

I would love to hear Chuck Zito on the show. He's a show biz whore and he just might do it.

Jim Vance was into freebase, not crack. Also valium. Also believes women should not smoke cigarettes in public.

I never understand when people say "I'd like to see you put your neck out there and do what he did" or some other incarnation of that phrase. In no way is that sticking up for anyone or putting anyone down. I take it as a compliment. I am aware of my faults and strengths. Public speaking is not a strength of mine. I would probably suck if I went on the failcast review. The difference between me and jhopkins is that I'm not a moron and I realize my flaws.

Please explain to me how "I'd like to see you do it!" proves anything to you? I honestly don't get it. Having balls, a huge ego and thinking you can do anything are not positives when you constantly "put your neck on the line" and show how stupid you are. I was embarrassed listening to him.

While I tend to be skeptical about Mike's rating claim, the overall ratings aren't very helpful here. We need timeslot ratings and ratings in his target demos.

The Junkies are getting ratings bonuses without apparently moving up the overall DCRTV list much. By the way, this is like the third quarter in a row for them - they might be on fire.

I spent a couple of minutes trying to find timeslot rating for that point in time and they all appeared to be behind a pay wall to me.

I don't think the LFF was lying about his rating. I think CBS thought guy talk was dead and was never gonna leave the 20th slot and that sports talk would be cheaper (aka get new less well paid people on the mic) and would get past 20th and if it didn't, well, it costs less to make so, maybe score?

This is something the LFF could talk about and would be interesting, but he won't. When he does, he hides the stories or pulls punches.

Stories about being an ok rated show in the #7 market when guy talk died on the FM dial would be interesting and would get people to pay for that content. He'll, he could probably make it a series.

Let's assume that those numbers are correct and during any given 15-minute slot 90k people in the DC metro area are listening to wjfk and that the number were more or less the same back in the TMOS days.

I can understand why the krewe is happy about 12k hard core fans. I'm betting the conversion rates are higher than we think.

If 13% follow you and hence buy your shit and click thru, yeah that prob isn't that bad.

It's funny how Mike's story has changed over time. It used to be "our ratings sucked, but we turned the corner near the end." Now it's "we had good ratings." Fact is, Mike had bad ratings on both WJFK and the Edge. He did record an uptick in the key male demo toward the end on WJFK, but that was due to the Caps lead-in. If Mike was pulling a money demo, no way WJFK would have canned him. And I don't believe Mike quit to keep "the krewe" intact. He almost had The Edge gig lined up in 2009, which was sans krewe.

Today, LFF's reliance on Spewak and KCJJ/Steve Bridges literally brought the beginning of today's podcast to a grinding halt. What a one-two punch of utter incompetence. Podcast equivalent of mixing ammonia and bleach.

Rob, frothing at the mouth was firing off every shitty grammar joke he could muster up in just the first 5 minutes of the show today. Talking over both Mike and Oscar just so he could throw in a punchline.

Was kinda funny with the KCJJ call and Mike started getting pissed at Rob for being a terrible board op and Oscar kept jabbing him at the same time making Slob very nervous and overly defensive.

Do you need a weather report to tell you when it's raining? Common sense should tell you swapping Geronimo for Spewack would hurt ratings...Do you really need the hard data?

Yes, the call to KCJJ was definitely a flaming shitpile, and as usual, should have been handled off-air...Have they not realized that we're onto the "showprep"=content routine?

The clipbplayed after the opening vignette poked fun at the formality of traditional broadcasts, versus the freedom of podcasting. This was followed by talk segments, news, audio vault, wrap-up by 79 minutes.

TMOS may as well provide traffic and weather on the 8s.

Maron's TV show is worth a look. It's in its second season. I started listening to his podcast a year or so ago; had no idea who he was before then, so it was a little hard at times to have a connection with him. TV show helps a lot in that regard. As I've stated, he is an angry guy with lots of issues but he IS self-aware, unlike LFF, so his take on his life and interactions with others has some perspective and nuance, again unlike LFF. I pick and choose which podcasts to listen to based on the guests (I started with ones like Mel Brooks and Carl Reiner) but like any good interviewer, he can elicit interesting things from anyone. For example, yesterday I enjoyed his interview of Amazing Johnathan, someone with whom I had just a passing familiarity.

If anyone is a fan of QOTSA, Maron's podcast is like, the only place that Josh Homme talked about what happened to him that delayed the last record, etc. It was really compelling and interesting, particularly for fans of the band.

There is an interesting discussion on a site with over 100 comments about his show ending. It seems half like him and half couldn't stand the show and wanted Jack Diamond to return.

Mike would have to have lost a large group of followers when the Don and Mike show ended.....if for no other reason, it was no longer the same show, not even close.

So Mike needed a good product to replace that lost audience. Never happened, then the second opportunity with Kirk never pans out either. A 12K audience has never been even close to reality.

Gonna have to listen to the 7/14 show so I can get my Robb hate on. By the way, "running" a Mackie board with a Mac and a cd player is not going to be a good header on your resume...that's kids stuff. And the other poster was right, Robb couldn't run Audio Vault at JFK, but he also felt he didn't need to because he's talent don't cha know.

Let's not forget that the entire premise of the 7/14/2014 vignette was somewhat flawed.

They spent the entire thing making fun of the sentence "Germany have won the World Cup"

In America, we do generally conjugate groups as a singular. But pretty much every other English-speaking nation does not. The ABC broadcast of the World Cup final did in fact say "Germany have won the World Cup" because he is a Brit. It's a perfectly acceptable way to structure that sentence.

so glad you pointed that out, it was driving me crazy! of course, they're not only so dumb in general that they didn't realize that, but they're also so ignorant about everything to do with "sports games" that they are probably picturing the country rather than the team.
