Welcome to Fairfax Underground, a project site designed to improve communication among residents of Fairfax County, VA. Feel free to post anything Northern Virginia residents would find interesting.
When Mac said he'd be in the studio on Monday in minute 34 Robb says "We won't be here on Monday" Oscar chimes in "July 3rd!" then Robb says "It's a federal holiday!",
Maybe they will take a drunk day, but the federal holiday is July 4th, Tuesday. The important thing is Robb was wrong. Again.
So Robb is telling a story of going to his elementary school teacher's funeral and Oscar chimes in "We don't need all this detail". Tuesday, Oscar proceeds to prattle on for half the show in EXCRUCIATING DETAIL about trying to get a stuck rat out of his chimney. I get the distinct impression Oscar now feels it's his show. In essence, he's correct because it would die without him, but does he really think we give a rat's ass (pun intended) about that story? I mean, that was a 3-4 minute throwaway at best.
And if I can chime in here, when 12 year old Aaron called (the call where they broke up laughing when he said "hello") and said "I have a question for Oscar" right out of the chute, Oscar says "What's the question?" then Aaron asked Oscar what's a good video game for 12 year olds, Mike interrupts "I can't answer that, Oscar maybe you can help." 54:47 - 55:47 That's right, in less than ONE MINUTE Mike loses the train of thought.
Alcoholic brain damage, the gift that keeps on giving.

Apparently Mike will be taking Friday's off this summer while in Maine...That was the ONLY nugget from the Bogus show this RUBE broke down and purchased

Oh great, weekly visits to the insipid Robb and Oscar lists and prep service shows.

He said it after ranting for a good half hour(It made up the BODY of the Bogus Show, but have no fear...plenty of time for Spewak to shoehorn in the list he had "prepped" for the bonus show) about how HARD he works...After listening to that abortion, I know why they HAD to put the DONATE button BACK out...I want my money back

Monday's show was a sad reminder of how far TMOS is from the old D&M days. Love him or hate him now, but back in the day, no one told vacation stories better than Don. That first day back from a vacation break was appointment radio. I don't ever remember Don not spinning some great yarns about what happened while they were off.
In contrast, all Mike did on Monday was bitch about the hotels he stayed at and how traveling on the eastern seaboard sucks. Of course, I'm sure he was exhausted from riding shotgun all day with his face in his iPad while his child bride drove. You can knock the Robb and Oscar shows all you want, but at least we don't have to be beaten over the head with Mike's negativity.
Thank you Blob! Worth the wait! And this page is off to a great start!
I'm planning my Monday off right now!
Mike taking every Friday off from what? So he really shouldn't say he loves what he does because then taking 70 minutes of a Friday morning at home wouldn't be so taxing...

That poor kid....no one pays attention...when they do it's helicopter....
So, if they are taking Monday and Tuesday off, and Mike is taking Fridays off for the Summer, does this mean Mike will be putting in a 2 day work week? Less than two weeks after melting down about how HARD he works?

He HAS to take Monday off. It's a Federal Holiday. It's like ABV or a salmon swimming upstream to his bed to eat cake and ice-cream out of a bowl. He can't control it.

Did they confirm the Friday thing on the regular show yet?
Speaking of transparency, how many times is Mike going to mention his 42 staples during a hissy fit? He did it during his Work HARD Meltdown o the Bogus and he also played the 42 staples/cut open like a haddock card several times during Oscar's well timed week off.

Don used to be able to do this about a lot of things. He could recap a meeting he had with station management and get 45 good minutes out of it. I don't listen to Don enough anymore to know if he still can pull this off.
As a person, Don might be as negative as Mike, but he has/had the skill of being entertaining as he vented. Mike's not near clever enough to turn his discontent into good (pretend) radio. Whereas Don could just excoriate the people and situations that annoyed him and make it compelling, Mike unswervingly returns to his "land of suck" and "entitled hump" spiels, which, like, if you've heard it once, you've heard it.
Which is to say, it's not just Mike's negativity that's turned me off the show-- it's his inability to do anything funny with it.
Oscar tells part two of the chimney story and Mikes asks questions about part one that he forgot that were fairly graphic? Is he that not engaged or his alcohol sponge of a brain that bad?
Anyone else notice Mike trotting out the ole family genetics today?
And he was all up in the jock of his "good friend" the Colonel for all the exercise he does and how skinny he is, then talked about how he too has "gotten out there and done it". The Colonel's PT is physical training, Mike's PT is physical therapy. Big difference. But good for him for trying with the boat, probably with the standard four beers in him.
> Is he that not engaged or his alcohol sponge of a brain that bad?
Yeah, the old genetics...NOT the years of alcohol, junk food, cigarettes, divorce, restaurants, inactivity, oh and that's why Kathy's husband is richer too... Genetics...
For those of you new to the show, Mike is "The Man Who Has Never Made A Bad Decision".

Agree, OWS. Compare how Don and Mike tell stories of their bad movie audience experiences. Though both guys are dicks, one of them can tell a story that's amusing or at least interesting. The other is just an unfunny, carping hump.

Mike made a bad decision once, but it WAS somebody else's fault
Carla: Cary, how much would you charge me through care.com to drive Mike back from Maine to Florida? I don't even need a discount. Frankly, I would pay a surcharge.
Cary: I love ya, but sorry, there is no amount you could pay me to spend 3+ days in a car with your two toddlers. No offense. I am sure you understand.

Thanks. This is spot on. Absolutely, the only difference between him and a guy who is career military is genetic (Jen Ettix?). Thank god none of those bad genes came from his sainted mother (did you know she died last year, thump thump thump).

Seriously, how good is this business school he went to? Did he really go to the U of Maryland? He's possibly dumber than he was before the MBA.
> Does anyone else think they've had zero

Before either the 1st shows at the State Theater or in Reno, they were spotlighting entries. Now, they are 'reminding' bands to submit. They'll end up grabbing some homeless 5 gallon bucket drummer off the street an hour before showtime.
The whole "we're really close to making a selection but you still have time to get your entries in" thing is kind of a tell. They could do the right thing and HIRE some hungry New Orleans band (there are bands in New Orleans, right?) but POOF! that would eat up all their profits and then some. The live appearances are all about unsupervised drinking and where possible gambling (on slot machines exclusively) like a brain damaged alcoholic, on the company dime.
Polka or Elvis bands are the only ones that would be interested in a non-paying gig for TMOS' 50+ demographic. They'd hope to sell some cassettes from a card table afterwards.
Event is sold out -- put Mike dancing on a DVD of the damn event, and I might buy it. Or, better, soft-touch, money-to-burn peekza could buy it and upload it for us. Or OWS -- he's used to dealing with Mike's legal "console."
Carla: You lucky bastards got a Mike-free Friday and will have a Mike-free week. Wish I could say that. My Mike-free looooong runs and drinks with the girls will have to do.
Yep, he mentioned that he still wears it for the most part. A reasonable interpretation is that not on weekends or other nights he's too hammered to manage getting it on -- like the dinner club night he and Cary hosted where he served the meal, excused himself, went upstairs and passed out for the night fully clothed.

I think in real life, Don is an insecure narcissist and a total a-hole; that being said, a lot of movie stars and musicians I enjoy probably are as well. That didn't diminish his ability to tell amazing stories, however wildly embellished they may have been. Mike on the other hand has absolutely zero ability to tell a captivating story. For a guy who recently reflected on how great his life is, he sure falls back on his Angry Mike and "land of suck" crutches a lot. I guess that's all he's capable of. Sad.

Legit question. I'm sure it's been discussed here before, but what is your guess on her annual stipend to the show?
I'm afraid to guess. Robb and his wife have no other means, did she ever get a job? Shannon plays a yogi, and Carla stays at home so... Oh and isn't Matt Blunt paid?

I was going to say $150K, but $200K is probably more accurate. Forgot that Pony needed a slice. I can't imagine the bonus shows generate more than around $15-20K. Not sure what the Amazon cut is either, but it can't be huge.

Good point -- can anyone think of a entertaining story that Mike has told well? I am stumped.
He is always (and only) the po'd victim -- the furniture store chair he broke was flimsy, his iphone that rang during the movie was poorly designed, his cowboy boots were to blame for him blowing out his knee in the bar fight, the appliance repairman came a little late and could have awakened Mike's son, people ignore his son, airplane and stadium seats are too small, etc. etc.
Oscar, RoFo, and even the detestable Spewak have more range.
The only story LFF has ever told well was driven by Don and it was the Shart Weekend story when he took Jarla and his daughters to Great Wolf Lodge, shit his pants while sacked out on the sofa watching tv, and didn't even know because he's so fucking fat and realized it when the girls walked into the room and asked if he had just farted.
I can't imagine LFF being capable of delivering that same narrative these days.

And he persists in calling that "my last barfight" when the truth is he got drunk, got angry, challenged a guy to a fight then fell down drunk on the way to the fight and got a booboo.
Just falling down drunk is not a barfight Mike. But that's an interesting window into his psyche. Whenever he says "barfight" he means "I fell down drunk."

In the Anal Sox episode Don said "I can do this with you or I can do it without you." The one thing we know Mike can do without Don is shit himself.

Let me guess. They talk about her dogs, one or more of her health problems/injuries, alcohol, old musicals, LPS crams in as many puns as possible, and he plays old station IDs to excess. That's about it. Oh yeah, in the middle, they pretend to go to a commercial break and say "we'll be right back."
It's painful to listen to for a number of reasons. As much as anything, it's sad to hear a middle-aged man (Colitis) pine away for someone he can't have (Cankles). You get the feeling that he set up this podcast just so he can be connected with Cankles, like a junior-high boy who asks his crush to be his team partner on a science project.
Added note: if you don't think LPS is lazy, consider that nearly every podcast (even Ronick's) has a lame promo or two for Blue Apron, Harry's Shaving, Stamps.com, etc. LPS can't summon up the energy to set one of those up for this shitshow he has with Cankles.
sorry, no open disrespect stories, peek. do not bother.
since Spewak found out C&C is no. 2 on More, he's doing them weekly. next one: all listener questions. ugh. don't think even I, a hate-listener, can stomach that.
So less than 2 weeks after Mike's "I work HARDER than anyone else on the show" rant he has taken the ENTIRE week off, in addition to Friday's for the ENTIRE summer? Sounds about right

No, there aren't. There's this site. You lying fat fuck.
In minute 19 Robb thought it would sell mattresses if he gave us an update on Mike and Carla's sleep numbers and Mike's sleep IQ. "Fuck that shit! Pabst Blue Ribbon!"
Tech expert Oscar can't keep track of the show's FB page vs the fanclub page? Let me simplify it for you Oscar...The Fanclub is a closed group that MOST TMOS listeners are blocked from, the SHOW page is where the TMOS staff posts non existent notices informing their customers that the show is running behind/taking calls/took the day off...Mike completely ignores the show's page and chooses to post exclusively in the closed fan page, so I can see why Oscar is confused

You didn't miss much...Mike asked a lot of leading questions and also shoe-horned in a reference to his daughter trying her hand at acting...a feat he would duplicate the next episode when he interviewed his cousin...And Robb asked him about the time he worked with John Wayne...naturally
I thought it was an okay interview, because of the guy being interviewed, not the interviewers. What I'd really like to hear is an interview with the guy who murders Robb. They should devote a whole show to that. Bring in the kids, the wife, the dog...
Here's a question: Pony mentioned the word "download" on Wednesday, but does anyone actually "download" it? I stream it. Is there a difference in terms of their metrics?
Btw, was wondering if anyone remembered me shitting myself... Does the App not stream always? They should make a download that ends abruptly after anywhere from 6 to 7 minutes and 32 seconds into the show. The average bail out time...

To be fair, for podcasters, downloads and streams look the same, and are all called "downloads" in metrics reports.
